Hi Eric,
First, thanks for sending out your portfolio. I was quite impressed and have been meaning to
be in touch with you. I have shown your work (by referring to your website) to several of my
writers/designers.
We'd like to discuss a job with you for one of our role playing game supplements. The job
would entail 6 interior illustrations (our stuff is more like an inked version of what you
classify as sketches than the full illustrations you have shown on your website) and a color
illustration for the cover which would be printed in a 7" diameter circle.
The interiors range in size from 1 1/2" high and 3 1/2" wide to 3 3/4" high to 7 1/4" wide.
Our traditional rates for 6 black and whites and a color cover illo have been in the $250 to
$350 range.
Please let me know if you would be interested. If so, I will send you the specs along with
photocopies of the pages where the art appears to help you see the kind of thing we'd be looking
for. I never know what something (creature, technical equipment) looks like until the artist
we are working with shows me. I am not one to pretend to know how to tell an artist what a
thing should look like. In this case, we do have a definite vision of the cover and will send
a photo (to which a giant spider creature should be added) - the photo shows the author and we'd
like the picture to continue to include the author's actual image.
If you are interested, we pay in advance when we send the specs and copyright all artwork in
the artist's name. We either return all originals (you do own them) or you can send stats of
black and whites in place of originals.

Hi Eric,
I will photocopy the relevant pages and pack it all up for you with descriptions of our vague expectations of illo subjects (but not how they actually look - that is up to you). I normally assume that artists are busy and expect it will take you about a month. If you are done sooner, so much the better, but that is not required or expected. I'll enclose a check for $300, sort of midrange for what we pay for this type of job. If you feel that the job is more demanding, we can pay up to $350 and I'll get another check off to you if you feel it is appropriate.
I'll send the package by Priority Mail tomorrow (Monday) so you should see it by Wednesday or Thursday.

General Notes:
1 Once you’ve been contracted, I will send out your illo descriptions, provide artistic direction and feedback, and be responsible for accepting or rejecting your work.
2 According to our standard contract, we retain all print rights to the work – though you can still sell prints and display the work for portfolio purposes.
3 Please note that our contract does not include a kill fee; artists are not paid for pieces that are ultimately rejected, but retain full rights to the work.
